Description

Constant plate varieties of the two dollars ‘Red Gums of the Far North’ definitive stamp By Greg Laidler Study of the constant plate varieties of the two dollar ‘Red Gums of the Far North’ definitive stamp This stamp is part of the Australian Paintings Definitive Series 1974-81 a reproduction of the painting by Hans Heysen issued 24 April 1974 The concept of reproducing nationally significant paintings on Australian postage stamps was first raised in December 1966. Similar stamps were being produced overseas. The paintings selected had to be suitable for reproducing in a stamp size, and not loose any of their detail or vibrancy. In preparing to print the stamps, the separation of the colours presented problems, especially obtaining the correct balance of colours. The preparation of the two dollar stamp “Red Gums of the Far North” presented the greatest problems and the printing cylinders were the last in this issue to be prepared. The tight deadline between completing the plates and issuing the stamps may be the reason there are so many These stamps are still widely available at a reasonable cost, in and on cover. This adds to the appeal of this interesting stamp.
